After viewing the two "Ecology of the Mind" films and reading the required texts for this class, I was unsure how to feel. I did not connect with the texts as well as I did with the two films, more so the Ecology of the Mind film dealing with the native tribe. The way that the man felt after returning to the village after being urbanized is a feeling that I believe a lot of us can relate to. It is a horrible feeling to be raised in one place for so long, leave for an extended period of time, and see how much has changed. I believe that theme in the film really struck a tone with me due to the fact that I have felt that way as of lately. In the film, the man wants to believe that he can feel the spirits just as his dad can, and that all those traditional gatherings of that culture have meaning, but he has a hard time doing so because of what he has seen and experienced in the urban world. I feel as if the man just wants to have that sense of belonging once again, that feeling of understanding that he may have had when he was younger. At some point in all of our lives I believe we all want that feeling, when things were less complicated and you weren't so afraid of the future. Aside from this film, the Gregory Bateson film sparked my interest as we revisited the portions one section at a time. The section of the double-bind happens to be my favorite for a number of reasons, the main one being that double-binds occur in my life almost every single day. Whether it be deciding to go to class or not, or just a simple daily decision concerning sleep or something of that small magnitude. I hope to view and read more material that will keep me motivated to think outside the box and help me progress positively as this course continues.
