“Where the Sea Meets the Land: Remembering Gregory Bateson”- This reading talked about Marilyn Price-Mitchell’s encounter with Bateson and how meeting him changed her mode of thought. She says that we should not view the world in separate parts, such as right and wrong, but rather to view the world as being a circular pattern and finding the connections between everything. Over the past several years – actually it’s probably been over the past several decades – I’ve been increasingly interested in “relationships.” I’d like to explore this topic briefly, but in some depth here. (read more…)

The film “Ecology of Mind” left me with thoughts about how I have been living and how I want to live in the future. There are a few quotes specifically that stood out to me.
“You might think you’re thinking your own thoughts, but you’re not. You’re thinking your culture’s thoughts.” This quote made me realize how much culture really does influence our thoughts. I personally have been strongly influenced by ads on tvs or in magazines, or just hearing other people talk about certain issues. It seems like it has become harder to form one’s individual opinion because of all the societal influences. It is even possible today for society to nearly strip an individual of all individuality and replace it with what is “right” and “normal” according to the culture.
One point made in the video was that our world could be a better world if we just learned to respect each other’s different understandings. Hearing this, I found myself nodding my head and completely agreeing. I have always been in favor of accepting diversity and accepting different ways of thinking. I believe that is what makes the world so interesting. If everyone thought the same way or had the same opinions on things, it would be an extremely boring place.
Another point in the video that stuck with me was when a woman said “you can’t kiss the same person twice.” I liked that conversation about how people are constantly changing. Change can be scary, and I am not always very accepting of it, but this statement made me realize how even when we are not purposefully trying to change, we are changing. Every second of every day. Tomorrow I will wake up and be someone different. That idea was something that resonated with me. Going along with this topic, the quote “change may be scary, but not changing is even scarier” probably stuck with me the most out of all the points made in the film. Recently I have been doing some self-evaluation and I have found things I would like to change about myself and the way I live. Although it is a scary concept to step out of your comfort zone and make a change, it is sometimes vital.
